Born in Germany, raised in Greece and now living in Turkey, Orhan Osman is first and foremost a musician, a composer, arranger and improviser – on this CD you’ll hear traditional songs such as the classic Chechen Girl, but you’ll also hear the influence of jazz fusion bands such as Weather Report; he’s a virtuoso of the instrument he loves, counted amongst the best and earning the name by which he is fondly known - Buzuki Orhan; he is a free-spirited traveller delighting in the music of the world - you’ll hear Greece and Turkey of course, but also the Balkans, India, Caribbean calypso, French gyspy jazz and touches of Celtic music. As he sings in [The song of the Gypsies] “I have no address, I’m happy”. Finally, he reflects in his music both the dynamism and gentleness in his personality - sparkling energetic bouzouki solos and tender reflective moods show him to be what he is, a true musician, an open-hearted citizen of the world.
Like many musicians Orhan Osman suffers from wanderlust. With his constant companian—the buzuki--Osman spent many years cultivating his unique sound in the United States and Bulgaria and fine-tuning his performing on stages in France, Germany, and Kazakhstan. By 2000, Osman was widely regarded as an unparalleled talent on the buzuki and was invited to teach at the Klezmer & Greco Turkish music/ CrossRoad Istanbul-New York workshop in Germany. Upon his return from Germany, Osman found inspiration for a new stage project called “Balkan Express” which is his musical interpretation of Bulgarian, Roman, Greek, Indian, and Turkish melodies. Following many years of touring and developing ideas for a “Balkan Express” album, Osman’s first album, “Devr-I Alem” was released. Heading back out on the road to experiment and accumulate material for his next album, Osman played with the “Istanbul Brass Band” and unveiled a new project “Bosphorus Kumpania” which involved interpreting traditional Rembetico sounds in modern arrangements and a 2004 album, “Gokkusagi.
Orhan Osman says goodbye to 2005 with two year-end releases on Doublemoon Records. The first is Osman’s latest solo album, “Reminiscing”, which dropped into stores in October of 2005. The second is a special project, Smadj presents “SOS Project”, which unites Osman with French-Tunisian oud player and producer Smadj and master clarinetist Savas Zurnaci.
